The first inheritance most of us ever received was not money.

It was a name.

Before we took our first steps, we were already carrying a surname. Before we earned anyone's respect, we had inherited a family's reputation. Before we made our own choices, we belonged to a story that had begun long before we were born.

This is what family does. It gives us an identity.

Among the Igbo, people often ask, "Ị bụ onye ebee?" which word-for-word means: Where are you from?

It is not just a question about your state of origin.

It is a question that has another hidden question asking: Who are your people?

Because for generations, a person's identity was understood through family, lineage, village, and community. To know where someone came from was to understand the values that raised them, the stories they inherited, and the legacy they were expected to uphold.

Names have always been an important part of a person.

The name Nneka tells us that Mother is supreme.

Chimamanda declares that My God will never fail.

Ikemefuna reminds us that My strength will not be lost.

Every name carries a conversation that passes meaning from one generation to another.

In Igboland, we say: "Aha ọma ka ego."- A good name is greater than wealth.

It is a remarkable proverb because it suggests that the greatest family asset cannot be bought, sold, or inherited through a will.

It must be protected by every generation that bears it.

This is the true purpose of family systems.

To preserve identity.

To ensure that values survive longer than the people who first lived them.

To remind every child that they are never the first chapter of the story but the newest one.

This is why the first thing we inherit is a name.

Because before the world asks us who we are,

Our family has already been answering.
